Where I was today

At the Emily Dickinson house! I was only there briefly, and didn’t make it in time to take a tour, so I couldn’t go inside, but I was in Amherst for a conference for work, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to stroll by. I’ll be back one of these days, most definitely.

  1. Wow! Nice house – no wonder she didn’t want to go out much. πŸ™‚ Hope the conference was good, too.

  2. Lovely! This is one of those author stops I have always wanted to make but not had the chance yet. My favorite is still Jack London’s house (and house remains) in California. I have some weird connection to the place.

  3. I’ve seen Kafka’s house and L.M. Montgomery’s in Toronto, but I don’t think any others.

  4. Ooo, I’ll go back with you if you’d like. I’ve never been, and it looks fantastic.

  5. Litlove — the conference was fine, on student support, so you might have appreciated it too! Yes, the house was quite nice, at least from the outside, and now I really want to walk through it.

Frances — I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get there, since it’s only two hours away. Jack London’s house sounds great. I really love visiting authors’ houses!

Lilian — Kafka and L.M. Montgomery — two good ones! I’d love to see both. I’ve seen Emerson’s, Hawthorne’s, and Edith Wharton’s in the last year or so. It’s been great fun.

Emily — oh, that would be great. We could probably drag Debby and Chris along as well, and make a big day of it.

  7. Wow, thanks for the picture. I don’t know how I got the idea that she remained in a modest little house, but I was definitely wrong.

  8. Such a big house! For some reason I always pictured a small house.

  9. I’m with Litlove–it looks like a nice, spacious house–I might live a hermit existence there as well! Lovely photo.

  10. Smithereens — I think the angle of my photo makes it look bigger than it is, but still, it’s definitely not a modest little house. It looks pretty comfortable.

Stefanie — it may not be quite as big as it looks, but it’s hardly a shack either!

Danielle — it does look like a nice place to live. I wonder what the neighborhood looked back in that time. Surely, it was much quieter and less populated. But still, she’s not far from town at all.

  11. Yikes! Looks like almost two weeks since I checked in. Sounds like you had a good weekend. I think I might prefer not being let in the house. After all, I wouldn’t want to feel like a stalker. πŸ™‚

  12. Bikkuri — hmmm … I’d like to see the house badly enough, I wouldn’t mind feeling like a stalker in order to do it πŸ™‚
