A lazy summer Saturday seems like the perfect time to do a meme, something I haven’t done in a while, generally because I’m disobeying orders from Her Majesty, which hasn’t gotten me in trouble yet, but I’m still being careful. This time around, Pete tagged me.
What was I doing 10 years ago?
Ten years ago I was getting ready for my wedding, or, more accurately, helping Hobgoblin get ready for our wedding. I was also studying for my masters comprehensive exams and preparing to begin my Ph.D. I was also preparing to teach for the first time ever. That summer I also went on a backpacking trip and did some house sitting for a faculty member at my school. Wow. How did I have the energy for all that?
Five snacks I enjoy in a perfect, non weight-gaining world:
- Hot fudge sundaes
- Brownies with ice cream
- Nachos
- Chocolate
- Apple pie
Five snacks I enjoy in the real world:
- Occasionally the above, but more often:
- Chips, of any sort
- Popcorn
- Cheese
- Apples
Five things I would do if I were a billionaire:
- Travel, including visiting other continents, but also hiking the Appalachian Trail
- Buy land and donate it to environmental organizations for conservation
- Donate money to research global warming and alternative energy sources
- Buy bikes and books
- Quit my full-time job but get a part-time one so I won’t go crazy with too much time on my hands
Five jobs that I have had:
- Babysitter
- Salad-bar filler
- School supply picker and packer
- Assistant Freshman Year Director
- Professor
Five habits:
- Checking email and Google Reader obsessively
- Reading a page or two before I fall asleep
- Drinking coffee in the morning — decaf
- Recording my cycling statistics (riding time, miles ridden, speed, heart rate, cadence, route)
- Recording books I’ve read, including dates begun and finished
Five places I have lived:
- Buffalo, New York
- Rochester, New York
- Chicago suburbs
- The Bronx
- Bethel, Connecticut
If this meme looks like fun, consider yourself tagged!
Dorothy, I’m sure you don’t need to be super-rich to do the Appalachian trail – you and Hobgoblin could probably cycle it in 30 days if you averaged just over 100kms a day! (Although I imagine you can’t take mtn bikes on the trail.) What did you do for your Ph.D?

I would have non-dairy chocolate “milk” shakes everyday in my imaginary snack world. And brownies with ice cream, yum! Popcorn is one of my favorite real-world snacks too. I like what you would do if you were a billionaire. Now, how can we arrange that without anyone going to jail? ๐

I also like recording my cycling stats! I love reading over the stats months later and being able to remember particulars of the ride; the weather that day, how hard the ride was, a particularly tough hill or who I was riding with. Lovely little reminders. ๐

One of my first jobs was working in a restaurant where I also took car of the salad bar. You get to see just how messy people are! I didn’t mind filling the veggie canisters, it was repacking the ice that I found disturbing–nasty cooked eggs…I did that for an entire summer, and it was enough to last a lifetime. I could never work in a restaurant again (I still sometimes have nightmares about that place!). Do you like Google reader? I use Bloglines, but I have a lot of trouble with them sometimes and have considered switching.

So, I see the key to getting you to respond to a meme is to have one of the other subjects tag you. I’ll have to remember that :-)! And I bet if I were a cyclist, I bet I’d record my cycling statistics too. As a matter of fact, I know I would.

Chocolate is my weakness so I probably enjoy that a little too often ๐
You know, I do record when I finished a book but not when I started it. Might be neat to see how long some books take!

Pete — no, you don’t have to be rich to hike the trail, but being able to get off work for 6 months at least sure helps! No mountain bikes — and I’ve hiked enough to know that mountain bikes will only get you so far on that trail … I studied 18C British travel writing for my Ph.D. — I wrote on the sentimental traveler in fiction and nonfiction. Fun stuff ๐
Stefanie — I can feel myself getting hungry … I could have added that one of my habits is an evening snack, and I could go for some popcorn right now!
Antipodeanowl — yes, I’d hate for all that information and all those memories to be lost! I have such a bad memory to begin with …
Danielle — no more restaurant work for me either, if I can help it! No, it wasn’t pretty ๐ I do like Google Reader — really it’s not so different from Bloglines, but probably more reliable.
Emily — yes, I’m a rebellious subject and will only obey if manipulated into it … ๐
Iliana — yes, I thought knowing how long it took to read something might be interesting — I know just how long it took me to read Proust, for example!

I think we have some very similar snacking habits. ๐
